Dear Jenna,
I don't know when you posted this message but it breaks my heart to read it.
I have a 23 year old son who was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. The disease has progressively taken over our son's life over the course of the past 10 years but only became obviously debilitating this past year. It was very difficult to get treatment for him because he did not always think he needed help. We are fortunate in that some of the time he did say he wanted help and we tried to use those moments to encourage him to agree to a treatment process, which would include seeing a psychiatrist and taking medication.
Not to go on and on with a million details but it took several months of broken appts, bad doctor appts etc before we realized that the only way this was going to work was to have our son hospitalized.
You are right that this is difficult without probable cause of harm. It was very emotionally draining, challenging and time consuming to do what we did but here it is:
I took our son to the emergency room and signed some forms saying he was incapable of meking his own decisions on treatment. He refused to sign anything himself but at least he didnt' try to bolt until after I had signed the paperwork and gotten the staff social worker and psychiatrist to sign off.
They were able to develop a case based off of my statements describing past events and bekhaviors which would indicate loss of touch with reality, auditory hallucinations, impulsive behavior, with enough examples to develop a case.
Hope this helps. Once my son was committed (even though it was not because of suicide attempt) the attending psychiatrist kept him im over a week as he said my son was suffering acute paranoid schizophrenic psychosis. He kept my son in the hospictal until results of medication were showing positive improvement. Thank heaven! I am so thankful that we were finally able to get treatment for our son. I can't tell you how the story develops as we just brought him home a few days ago. But each day it seems like he is regaining some of his cognitive skills.
Our son is in his 5th year of Chemical Engineering and was at one time a very bright kid. For the past year he has been unable to read or concentrate on anything other than escapist things like video games (not even that in more recent montkhs.
I feel bad for your family knowing that this has been going on with your brother for 10 years with no help.
If there is any way to have him hospitalized for initial treatment, I would highly recommend it. You and your family may have to put a lot of effort into developing a case for it but it definitely sounds like it is needed.
Good luck,
Terry
